Ram Vilas Paswan led Lok Janshakti Party Gives BJP an Ultimatum

In the ever heated political climate leading to the 2019 general election, a new headline is made every day. The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has constantly been put under scrutiny its allies, many of which left the BJP led coalition NDA. In the recent past, BJP has lost several allies, major ones include TDP and PDP. Shiv Sena has also constantly kept BJP on hooks. Throughout this time, however, the Ram Vilas Paswan led Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) has been one of the most supportive allies. That changed on Friday when the party put BJP on notice and gave it an August 9 ultimatum. The statement issued the leaders said that they would join the Dalit protests against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi if their demands are not met then.

The Ram Vilas Paswan led Lok Janshakti Party has two major demands from the Modi led central government. The first being the removal of National Green Tribunal (NGT) chairperson Adarsh Kumar Goel and the second being an introduction of Bill in Parliament to restore the stringent clauses of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act the government.

Justice (Retd.) Adarsh Kumar Goel was a part of the Supreme Court Bench that Dalit groups accuse of having diluted the law for protecting Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from atrocities. A March 20 decision given the Supreme Court Bench had permitted bail and denied arrest without police verification of people accused under the SC and ST prevention of atrocities law.

Ram Vilas Paswan led Lok Janshakti Party has six seats in the Lok Sabha and has a major vote bank in the Dalits of Bihar. The party claims that the rise of atrocities against the Dalits is what fuelled this action.

“We will cross the bridge when it comes,” is what the Chirag Paswan, a leader of the Ram Vilas Paswan led Lok Janshakti Party has to say when asked what will be their course of action if their demands are not met.
